It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of Professor Charles Oxnard (1933-2025), one of our Centre's renowned committee members. Charles passed away peacefully on 27 June 2025 in Perth.
Educated at the University of Birmingham, Charles held academic appointments at the University of Chicago and the University of Southern California, and later at the University of Western Australia, where he became Professor Emeritus.
Charles was a pioneering anatomist and evolutionary biologist, renowned for his groundbreaking work on primate and human evolution, functional anatomy, locomotion, and morphometrics. He maintained strong ties with China through his research on Rhinopithecus morphology and evolution, including long-standing collaborations with Professor Pan Ruliang.
His work challenged conventional views on human ancestry and culminated in several influential publications, including The Order of Man and Uniqueness and Diversity in Human Evolution. Among many honors, Charles received the Charles R. Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award and UWA's Chancellor's Medal.
