Ecosystem Observation Network and Vertical Monitoring System for the Three Parallel Rivers Area of China

To monitor the Three Parallel Rivers region and its diversity (environmental, biological, and human cultural diversity), as well as its response mechanisms to climate change and human activities, the Eastern Himalaya Research Institute and the International Center for Biodiversity and Primate Conservation (ICBPC) have established the "Monitoring Network for the Three Parallel Rivers Area of China and its Diversity." This network will establish at least nine long-term field observation stations in the region to monitor environmental, biological, and human cultural factors, aiming to understand the origins, evolution, and maintenance of diversity. This integrated monitoring and conservation management will be conducted from a watershed perspective.

Behavioral Monitoring and Conservation Management Project of the Black-and-White Snub-Nosed Monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti)

This project conducts long-term behavioral monitoring and conservation management of the black-and-white snub-nosed monkey (Yunnan snub-nosed monkey) in the Yunling mountain range within the Three Parallel Rivers region. ICBPC has established five field research bases in the Yunling range, covering the entire distribution area of the black-and-white snub-nosed monkey from south to north.

Behavioral Monitoring and Conservation Management Project of the Black Snub-Nosed Monkey (Rhinopithecus strykeri)

The black snub-nosed monkey (Nujiang snub-nosed monkey) is a newly discovered species of snub-nosed monkey, first identified in Myanmar in 2009. Subsequently, it was also found in China in the Gaoligong Mountains (Pianma, Lushui, and Daxingdi in the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture). There are approximately 10 populations in China, with an estimated total of 600 individuals. To protect this species, ICBPC collaborates with the Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve to conduct behavioral monitoring and conservation management of the black snub-nosed monkey.

Behavioral Monitoring and Conservation Management Project of Phayre’s Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus phayrei) in the Southern Gaoligong Mountains

In the Gaoligong Mountains, ICBPC has habituated a group of Phayre’s leaf monkeys in Xiaoheishan and has been conducting long-term behavioral monitoring to understand their adaptive behaviors to the mid-mountain humid evergreen broadleaf forest, as well as their behavioral responses to human disturbances.

Baseline Survey and Conservation Management Project of Primates in the Nu Mountains

The Nu Mountains serve as the watershed between the Nujiang and Lancang Rivers and are the only region in the Three Parallel Rivers area without a nature reserve. The lack of baseline biodiversity data hampers conservation efforts in this region. Since 2010, the Eastern Himalaya Research Institute has been conducting a wildlife survey using 3D visualization methods to search for potential new species of snub-nosed monkeys in the Nu Mountains. Infrared cameras have been set up in areas where snub-nosed monkey species were previously suspected to occur. After a decade of survey work, while no new species of snub-nosed monkeys have been discovered in the Nu Mountains, ICBPC has identified the northernmost population of the Western black-crested gibbon (Nomascus concolor), extending its known distribution by 150 km northward. This project provides foundational data on the population, distribution, and conservation status of this species. Moreover, the region is found to have high biodiversity, with four species of macaques, one species of gibbon, and one species of leaf monkey recorded. The baseline biodiversity data and findings from this project will support the establishment of a protected area in the Nu Mountains.
